Brierley Hill school children proudly show off local history projects

Children from Brierley Hill Primary School have proudly showed off projects which tell the history of their local area.

Exhibitions that tell the story of Round Oak Steels Works, Marsh & Baxter Butchers, the local canal network, how the Merry Hill centre came to be, and other significant elements of local history were worked on by children from all year groups and put on display at Brierley Hill Library for members of the public to enjoy.

The School said they wanted the children to be aware of all the local history which surrounded them, and therefore each year-group focused on a different aspect of Brierley Hill’s history before sharing the work with each other.

Early years foundation stage focussed on the change of school over time; KS1 explored canals; Years 3 and 4 studied the change of land use between Round Oak to Merry Hill; and Years 5 and 6 produced work around the famous Marsh and Baxter Butchers.

Visiting the children’s work, Mike said:

“Ensuring that the next generation understand the history of our local area is so important. It helps build a sense of identity and understanding that helps children think about the world around them and how things can, and inevitably do, change.

“The children and staff have clearly worked extremely hard on this exhibition and deserve a really big well done for all their efforts.”

History Lead, Sophie Harvey said:

“I am overwhelmed with the enthusiasm of the children and the high quality of work they have all produced. We hope to turn this into an annual focus, where we can delve deeper into our rich, local history year upon year.”

The exhibition, which is a culmination of all the hard work that the children produced to celebrate their local area, will be on display in Brierley Hill Library till 20^th August.
